Limit Holdem: Considerations for the Flop
The way you play your cards on the flop in Limit Holdem will have a tremendous influence in how you fare the rest of the game. For this reason it is vital that you evaluate the whole situation carefully before making any decisions.
The hands that you will play with must depend to an extent on whether it is a full ring or a short handed Limit Holdem game. The fact is that the more players on the flop, the greater chance of success of your drawing hand. Small pairs and suited connectors work very well in long handed games.
If it is short handed, then you need to focus your Limit Holdem strategy for the flop on the big pairs, as they are much stronger here. Depending on the type of Poker table that you are in, you may be able to play with hands like AT, KQ or QJ aside from the usual pairs of Aces and Kings.
Keep in mind also that in Limit Holdem, the fewer players that remain on the flop, the more expensive the draws can become, so make certain that you have a good hand. If the table is tight, it would be a good tactic to use scare cards on the board, like a Q or even a J and make a bet. This might cause some tight players to fold, thinking you have a set.
Although Aces are powerful hands, you should avoid playing them on the flop if the kicker is weak. You might get the top pair, but in all likelihood the same card will also give your opponent a two pair or an even better Limit Holdem hand. The only exception would be if you are in the late position. Here you can use the Ax to steal the blinds.
Playing the Aces too often is a mistake that is often made by new players, and once your opponents figure that out you will be easy pickings. When you hold an Ace, always check out what your other hands are, as well as what is on the board, before plotting your next Limit Holdem move.
Playing the flop in Limit Holdem can be quite complicated, but the fact is that you will be able to make the necessary and correct moves by simply playing more and analyzing your game. Take the time to study what is going on at the flop and you will definitely win more games.
